Phil's G.I. Joe Page

Wait... you're actually reading this?!

Driving back home today, I encountered a little rain; not just a little sprinkling, but some sizable drops hitting at a brisk pace. Nothing too unusual in this, save for the fact that from what I could see out my windshield, the sky was clear, with only a small scattering of clouds. Apparently, I happened to pass under the one cloud that was dark and saturated enough to rain. It was actually pretty bizarre, to see no clouds, yet experience rain.

Reading my new boatload of comics (see previous entry), I'm surprised how little free time the X-Men seem to have. In the issues I'm reading, there's almost no down time at all. I guess that's kind of a mark of how greatly comics have changed since the 70's. Now you can go three or four issues without any major battle happening. In these old issues, even in their rare free time, the X-Men are attacked. How odd. And I'm actually delighted to see how well the art looks!

I've survived another barrage of Wednesday classes and come out relatively intact. During my hour break, I decided to pop into the campus bookstore and pick up something I'd been eyeing for a few weeks. For a school bookstore, UCSD seems to have a good selection of comic book trades and anime. I'd been looking at getting the "Essential X-Men" books for a while now. They're just trade paperbacks of the 70's and 80's X-Men comics, about 20 issues at a time. The bookstore had all four volumes there for $15 apiece. The only downside is that they're not in color. I figured it wasn't that big a deal to me and decided to pick 'em up. Hopefully, I should have a lot of fun reading them.

I've decided that my Tuesday class is my worst this quarter, and I know I'm not alone in my assessment. The class is about the history of art and technology, a required course for those of us in the computing emphasis of my major. But I get no sense of history at all. Instead, we seem to jump around from point to point, are introduced to various artists who are just as quickly forgotten, and lectured to in a completely, mindnumbingly-dull manner. And the technology we're told about has little relevance to a computing emphasis. We want to know about multimedia technology, not paintbrushes as the only technology available in a certain time period! I've learned more about the history of art and technology in my intro classes.

Apparently, there's still some life left in my digital camera. The optical zoom still doesn't retract all the way, but I can at least get it to operate well enough to take pictures and get them on the desktop. I guess I'll hold off on getting another camera for now; at least until mine is completely and irreparably broken.

I've officially added a Dio-Stories section to my site, linking "G.I. Joe: The Final Frontier" and my VIS 60 final project (which I'm now calling "G.I. Joe: Black & White") from there. I really like making these things, the only problem is I don't have any real sets to photograph these things in. Luckily, it didn't really matter for the two I already have (in fact, I think it's a bonus for "The Final Frontier"). However, I wouldn't expect any more of these for a while since my digital camera's out of commission. Sure, I could use my 35mm, but I just don't have the planning and patience to shoot the pictures and then wait for them to get developed to add in the effects. I dunno, we'll see.

I registered for next quarter's classes back on Tuesday. Due to the Vis Arts Department dropping their departmental approval requirements, signing up became much less painful compared to earlier quarters. Much less. I'm still waitlisted in two classes, but hopefully I'll get into them. Now all I need to do is get that minor officially going.

I figured it'd be really funny just to post something on the site that you couldn't read. Yes, it's in plain English, but who's memorized the Wingdings font? Anyways, if you took the time to "translate" this thing, lemme know in the comments section by answering this question: What's your favorite movie?

Man, I really shouldn't have put off this art paper until tonight. It's not that I don't think I can write it, it's more a question of getting myself to actually type this thing out. This class is such a bore, and I have such a dry topic that I find myself procrastinating when I no longer have the time to! In fact, I'm procrastinating just by typing this!

I spent a lot of my money buying DVDs over the weekend. I finally got ahold of two of the last three Roughnecks DVDs I don't have, and I also managed to pick up this pretty snazzy 1:18 scale DeLorean replica from Back to the Future. The wheels can change between driving and hover modes! God, I am so geeking out here.

Once Again, It's Random Thoughts for the Day:

- Hey, I've had this blog now for two years! Kick ass!

- I hate going to the dentist. But apparently, this time I'm doing good.

- There are a lot of things I want to buy right now. And I don't even know why!

- My digital camera died two weeks ago. Dad says he'll get me a new one, but I'm so impatient with this thing.

Wow, for the first time since I started the quarter, I haven't procrastinated on doing my homework! I actually did my homework for Vis 145B today instead of Tuesday. Actually, it's really out of necessity since I know I won't get any work done over the three day weekend, and I'll need all the time on Tuesday to write that damn paper fro Vis 159. But hey, I can still be proud that I diod it, right?

Ever had a day that just seemed to drag on endlessly? That was today for me. I mean, Wednesdays are tough this quarter normally, but something about today made me start losing my mind. I can't say it's lack of sleep. What's wrong with me??

Another paper down, another paper to go. Hey, does anyone want to get together on Saturday night for a kind of subdued, Anti-Valentine's Day thing? We poor, single masses need to stick together! My parents will be gone for the night since it's my mom's birthday, but my grandma will still be home. A bit of a bummer, but that doesn't mean we can't meet to watch movies and play video games, right?

I have a paper due Wednesday, which means, of course, that I won't due it until tomorrow. I still need to catch up on reading for two classes, but in one of them it's not so important at the moment. Regardless, I should have everything sorted out in time, procastination and panic aside.

Next quarter's class scheduling begins next week. My, how time flies. But I did just get this bit of good news in my e-mail:

I am excited to inform you that the Visual Arts Department will no longer require a department stamp to enroll in upper division production courses beginning Spring quarter 2004.

Students may now enroll themselves in upper division production courses via WebReg. Students will no longer need to receive authorization from a department advisor to enroll in upper division production courses.

Hallelujah! Do you have any idea how many hours I've lost just to spend 5 minutes while someone says I can take the class I wanted??

My midterm papers seemed to be assigned without a clear goal in mind. My film class says to look at two musical scenes and analyze them. My art history class tells me to look at an art movement and analyze it. Ugh. I hate papers with a passion.

Just finished yet another busy Wednesday. In the morning we watched a video so the class seemed to end fairly quickly. My computer lab class was spent showing midterm projects; I think I did fine, but there was definitely room for improvement. After that the art discussion class just dragged on and on until I finally managed to escape. And tonight's musical film was "West Side Story," a long but entertaining film that only had 15 minutes of lecture before it.

I spent most of this morning (that I was awake during...) making screenshots from some of my DVDs. I don't know why I've never done this before, I guess I didn't feel the urge to until now. So now I have a nice pic of the Eterprise-A and the Excelsior from Star Trek VI as my desktop wallpaper. I'm quite happy.

Wow, February already. In 11 days, I'll have had my weblog going for 2 years! Anyways, Yosemite was freakin' cold, man! Thirties and forties in the day, and dropping below freezing at night. I did get surprisingly close to some deer, though.
