My one class today was a discussion section for an intro class to Viaul Arts. The only reason I'm taking it is to fill a prviously unknown requirement for one of my final classes. Fun stuff? I'm already annoyed with the class. I don't need the class for my major, and it's quite likely that, if I tried, I could talk to the professor for the class I need and skip this whole "intro class" crap. Of course, it's probably too late to do that.

The server hosting my website seems to be a tad flaky lately. As a result, yesterday's post didn't show up, the site was inaccessible for a while, and if you checked here five minutes before this post, you would've noticed a bit of a time warp. Yep, it made the most recent post August 31st. Good thing that Blogger stores all my posts. I may actually have lost some of them.

I think I may be in trouble here. It's quite possible that during the course of the quarter, I may die of boredom. I had my third class today, Vis 1, which I really shouldn't have to take, and probably don't, but it's a requirement for one of my last classes for my major. It's quite dull. Vis 180B doesn't look too promising, either. My only hope is that my theater class somehow holds my interest. I'm not keeping my hopes too high. I suppose I'll find out how well I handled my classes in about ten weeks, though.

Well, that first day of classes is over and done with. I only have two classes, but it seems that the second one may turn out to be incredibly boring. It's never a good sign when the professor spends all three hours of the first class going over introduction stuff. And still runs out of time. But at least I didn't fall asleep, right?

I'm back in San Diego and am miraculously connected to the internet. Actually, my roommate Justin set up the connection so all I had to do was connect the cords and turn on the computer. I start classes at 2 tomorrow, so I've got a lot of time to sit on my ass and wait. Go me!!

Tomorrow I drive back down to San Diego. Thursday I have my first classes of the year. *Sigh* Party's over, I guess. Time to get back to work. And this time I definitely have to have a job. I've said it before, but now dad's coming down on me hard. I have to get one. I felt that I had hardly any free time over the summer, so how's it gonna feel working not only on school projects, but also for a paycheck? My mind boggles, my brain fizzles, and I create a scenario in my head which will seem much, much worse than it really will be. Oh well. I need to pack up.

I've been trying (and failing, mostly) to get my guestbook and e-mail pages running again. They're still not working, so I wouldn't bother using them yet, but I just thought I'd let you know that I haven't completely forgot about these two pages. They're the only ones still affected by my move to my own domain. Sure, it's been almost a year, but at least I'm working on them, right?

Reason #276436234 Why I Shouldn't Have a Credit Card

Value according to Toyarchive.com at this time:

Han Solo (In Carbonite Chamber) (1985): $75
Luke Skywalker (Imperial Stormtrooper Outfit) (1985): $130

Lucky for me I found them somewhat cheaper, eh?

You know, for a day off, I was actually pretty busy. Lessee... I had an 11 am dentist's appointment, some housework, working at my jo-- hey, what the hell? Yeah, I got called into work for a few hours today. It wasn't really busy, and I didn't stay very long, but still, I kinda think that I was there because none of the managers wanted to work a box office shift. (They were supposed to anyways!) Whatever, it's another twenty bucks for me. Dear lord, I need a higher hourly wage. I worked about three hours and only made ~$20!

I think I know why I'm feeling such a resurgence in my love of Star Wars toys. In the lobby at Edward's is the Star Wars Trilogy arcade game. It's constantly pumping out John Williams-orchestrated theme music throughout its intro loop. Now, I'm the first to admit that anything looped in the lobby of my theater gets annoying after about ten minutes. That's part of the reason why I can't stand the commercials that air on our plasma screens above the concessions stands. But I like the Star Wars music. And when it's mostly drowned-out by the normal sounds of the lobby, it doesn't get on my nerves. What it does do, though, is act like a subliminal message constantly getting me to want to watch Star Wars and buy its toys.

See? This post had a point!

Lately I've been getting back into my Star Wars collection. Those $10 vintage packaged toys now at retail really reminded me of just how cool the old, original action figures really were. Sure, a lot of details were lacking, and the likenesses left something to be desired, but the packaging still looks amazing, and the telescoping lightsaber feature still rocks.

Now, if you know me, you'll know I have a Star Wars collection that rivals the size of my G.I. Joe one. These two lines alone probably take up half my room space. But I've been looking at my Star Wars toys, and I've noticed something. A lot of these toys I no longer really like. See, when the toys came back in 1995, someone at Kenner (or Hasbro, as they owned it by now), decided it would be a cool idea to give each character a body pumped full of steroids. The bulky look worked back in '95, as they were the first Star Wars figures in 10 years, but now that smarter heads have prevailed and most figures these days try to be as movie accurate as possible, the mid-'90s figures just look out of place. So out of place that Hasbro (who now has complete control of the line), has issued resculpted, more accurate figures of just about every steroid-pumped character.

Of course, at the time it really didn't matter to Hasbro. Star Wars toys have been a perpetual fast seller since they reintroduced the line. It really was the fans who managed to change the direction of the likenesses. Strangely, though, I don't feel this way about the old 78-85 line. These guys look way off the mark yet somehow they're still cool, and I still want them.

So what's my point? It's that I've tried to control my spending so that I've got enough figures that I only need to buy toys that really attract me. And the vintage carded figures really do. So much so that I may use them as my default figures for these characters. Of course, I've got so many now that it really doesn't matter, but whatever. But I am getting perilously close to deciding on getting one of every original figure. And that's a slippery slope of high prices and numerous figures. And I really don't have that kind of money right now.

Well, it's September already. As I'm writing this, it's the wee hours of the morning of the fourth, and I'm still winding down from an eight-hour shift at Edward's. I'll probably be putting in my two weeks' notice there on the sixth, as it'll give me a few days before school starts to get accomodated with living back in San Diego. Again, nothing else much is happening, although I did get to hang out with Ken for a few hours on Thursday. (The first time since June!).
