Phil's G.I. Joe Page

Wait... you're actually reading this?!

I just got back from seeing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with Justin. Both he and I found the movie very entertaining, with a lot of laugh-out-loud parts. I suppose enjoying this movie depends upon whether or not you're a sci-fi fan, and whether or not you've experienced any of this movie's previous incarnation. I haven't (I don't know about Justin), and so not knowing much about the source material frees me up from picking apart every line and obsessing over what's been changed.

A world of Mike's own

Hey, my brother finally started a blog! How cool is that? Now I can keep up with all his griping when he goes through four years of medical school! Um... on second thought, maybe it isn't such a great idea.... Oh, I hope Mike doesn't read this now. He'll probably hurt me for typing that, or something. So why am I still typing this? And why do I know it'll still be here when I press the "Publish" button?

Somehow I ended up with a staple gun in my costuming practicum today. I was replacing the cover they use on their large ironing board. Another advanced practicum student from last quarter, Richard, was helping me out. We almost ended up doing a Three Stooges-type scene with the way we were acting. I found it pretty funny, and I know a few other people did, too, but I'm still a little worried we may have been distracting to the work going on.

I wrote my second script for my Scripting and Editing Strategies class. This was a 2-page subtext dialogue assignment, which I wrote to be a spy movie scene where the hero confronts the villain for the first time. I felt my substitution of corporations for world domination was painfully obvious; Justin thought so, too. Evidently it wasn't obvious enough, as only about half the class got what I was talking about. I'm contemplating reworking the scene to submit to the teacher for a better grade. The contemplation comes from the fact that I don't know my current grade, and whether or not I need to improve it.

Disneyland's starting to look nicer and nicer as they near May 5. That's the day the park officially kicks off the 50th anniversary celebration. Most of the buildings are all repainted, the finishing touches are going into the last of the refurbished rides, and they've started putting up these golden Mickeys everywhere in the park. Very nice looking, and rather fun to find, too. Now I just wish my Buzz Lightyear photo would show up on the website already!

It's been a very busy weekend. I drove home early Friday to go to a dentist appointment. When I was through there, I had a few hours to myself before the parents came home. We were planning to go to Disneyland Saturday to check out my picture in the photo-collage, but then e noticed dad's unused 2Fer pass expires on Thursday. So we drove over to Disneyland to see if we could spend a few hours at the California Adventure park, only to discover that the park closed in two hours. We ended up killing time in Downtown Disney and the hotels. We did go to Disneyland yesterday, though. We got there an hour after opening and left about 10 hours later, so we spent a fairly good amount of time walking around and riding the attractions. Mike gave us his Angels tickets for that night (he had to work), so we drove over there in time to see that amazing 11-run 5th inning. Happily, the Angels won the game. We then drove back to Disneyland, because my mom's high school prom was in the hotel! She took some pictures of her students. And then, oddly enough, we somehow ended up driving a drunk lady to her home. It was a very strange ending to a very long day.

A few months back, I scoured the family photographs for any pictures I could find of my family and me at Disneyland. I intended to submit copies to Disneyland for a promotion they're doing for their 50th anniversary. Details for the "happiest Faces on Earth" photo-collages they're making with the submitted photos can be found here. In the last few days, these collages have started popping up around the park. Now, today I got the e-mail from Disneyland telling me they would inform me if my photos were accepted and, if so, where they'd be. But looking at the photos fans have posted online of the collages netted a surprise. In one of the random detail shots showing some of the submitted photos, I found one of mine! For some reason, that totally made my day. So now if you look really hard, you can see me and my brother somewhere between Mickey's left eye and nose in the photo-collage in Toontown!

The costume shop people trust me enough now to sew together some mock-up shirts. In case you didn't know (which is likely), mock-ups are pretty much cheaply put together pieces of fabric sewn the same way the normal garment would be. This way, if you mess up, you've only screwed up some crappy piece of muslin instead of an expensive fabric. Mock-up or not, I was still a little nervous putting the damn thing together.

I finally got to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid today. Although I had to read the script first. Not that I didn't already know the ending, mind you, but it is still a little sad that all the surprise was gone by the time I sat down and watched it in my scripting class. At least the script was a finalized version, so I got to see some interesting divergences of the film. Now to find me a copy of Butch and Sundance: The Early Years! Woo-hoo to rightly-unmentioned sequels!

I saw Sin City again yesterday, only this time with my parents. I'm still not sure which is weirder: the fact that I saw Sin City with my parents or the fact that they got it. Dad particularly seemed to really enjoy it. Mom fell asleep two times during the show, but that's really nothing special. Mom never stays awake during movies. In fact, it's quite often that a movie will show on HBO or Showtime that everyone in the family has seen, yet mom will have no recollection of it.

I just got back from doing the GRE general test. I guess I did ok.... I saw my test scores for the math and English parts at the end, but without knowing what the best score was, they really didn't mean anything to me. I do know that the math score didn't look so great, but I've since forgotten what both my scores were. Either way, I'm tired, and my butt's sore.

So guess who didn't study for his GREs today like he said he would? Really now, the answer should be obvious. Still no clue? Really? Oh man....

Anyways, that pile of comic books waiting for me to be read is now a pile of comic books I most likely won't ever look at again. Not that I dislike these books, mind you, I'm just not much of a repeat reader. And knowing how many comic books I'm signed up for month after month, I never really find that I'm lacking material to peruse.

I don't really have anything to talk about today. My practicum today was pretty routine, and it was my only class. I do have to take the GRE test on Saturday, so I should be studying for that, but when have I been known to study? I have hours to kill tomorrow, I'll probably do it then. Other than that, I'm just sitting around in the apartment while Justin does his homework. There's not much to do, but I do have a stack of comic books waiting to be read.

I turned in my first screenplay for my Scripting class. It was a little rinky-dink 2 page script that I belted out in less than an hour. The assignment called for no dialogue, so I used this as a chance to create an establishing scene for a larger picture. It's pretty much an idea I've had floating around in my head for a while, so thinking up what to write wasn't an issue. And the teacher even liked my idea; he wants to read some more. And you know what? I'm keen on writing more.

I went to Universal Saturday with my parents and Ken. It was pretty fun to hang out at this park for a change, and the lines were pretty decent for a Saturday. In fact, I was surprised that we managed to see as much stuff as we did. We were only there for seven hours, but we went on almost everything. Of course, if they reopened the Wild, Wild, Wild, Wild West Stunt Show, it would be even better. You hear me, Universal??

Mom stayed the night in my apartment for some reason, and we drove around San Diego in the early afternoon today. We had lunch in Old Town San Diego, and even visited two Toys R Us stores on the way back home. Now I'm back in Orange County for the weekend, and I'm planning to go to Universal Studios tomorrow.

Mom's been on spring break this week. To get away from the depressing task of going through all of grandma's old things and throwing out the junk, she decided to come down to San Diego and spend a few hours with me before my class. So we went to Target and the San Diego Brewing Co. for an early dinner. Nice to have a meal I didn't pay for and a filling one at that.

Since it was a slow day in the costume department, I only had to stay for two hours in my lab today. It was a nice, short day of easy work that I hope to have the fortune of repeating in the future. Sure it's an easy four hour lab, but it's even easier when it's only two hours.

I just got back from seven hours of college, and like I figured, my four hour lab class took less out of me than my three hour discussion. Maybe the topic of screenwriting is more boring than sitting in a chair a sewing is; I don't know. I just know that my costuming practicum should be an enjoyable experience. And now that I've finalized my schedule with the Registrar's Office, I can safely waste away the hours in the costume shop and not worry about that pesky 10 am theatre and film comparison class I had signed up for earlier. That class has officially been dropped.

I spent way too much money on Star Wars toys this weekend. I couldn't help it, though! Episode III stuff just came out last Saturday, and in trying to track down an early bird kit from Wal-Mart, I ended up getting just about all the nice, shiny figures I saw. Of course, there were a few characters I had little to no interest in, but I did buy the majority of the individually-carded figures. I only bought two vehicles, though.

Oh, man. I saw Sin City today. It's ultra-violent, highly stylized, and with a good amount of female nudity. It was fucking brilliant! And the season finale of Battlestar Galactica? My heart is pounding, that's how engaged I was in the show. And now I'm incredibly hyper after watching tv. I don't even know if that's ever happened to me before!
