With a timely sale at Fry's, I was able to buy the final components to upgrade the tv setup with the Blue-Ray player. It can connect to the internet now! I know, it seems weird, but I was able to update the player's firmware, and both of my current Blue-Ray discs have online features. It only took four trips to two different Fry's over three days. Yikes!

In other news, Nammy dropped by to help me set up the internet connection for the player and help me put up the Christmas lights. Normally Mike helps out with that, but he's not exactly around! I promised mom I would get them up this weekend, mostly because she was thinking about having me put them up before Thanksgiving. I had to draw the line somewhere!

I have had quite an unorthodox Thanksgiving. Actually, I wasn't even with my family. Mom flew to Detroit to visit Mike on Monday, and dad left on Wednesday. They won't be back until the end of the weekend. Instead, I drove down to San Diego to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family of an AX friend. Brittany had to stay with relatives, but I did manage to sneak Sierra down there.

Most of last night was spent in line waiting for Fry's to open. Most of the time, when I engage in Black Friday sales, I regret the experience enough not to do it for the next few years. This time was a bit odd. We were at a San Diego area Fry's with a relatively small crowd. Many AX people composed our group, and the AV guys set up a tv to run off a car battery and play video games and dvds to pass the time. When the store opened, we pooled our resources to make the most out of getting the items we were looking for - getting into necessary lines, everyone searching for certain items, and sorting out the list when everyone completed their tasks. For the most part, this worked out quite well. I've now got a Blue-Ray player!

And then tonight I attended a gathering of Troy people to celebrate the holiday. This was a group of people from my high school, some of whom I had not seen in seven years. Apparently, it's something of a yearly tradition and this was their best turnout so far. I am happy to have been a part of it.

With my birthday yesterday, a group of us ate dinner at Angelo & Vinci's. Our party consisted of AX people and my parents, so it was a first experience for most of the guests. I know they were a bit thrown off by the decor, but it sounds like the food was a hit. I just regret not getting those delicious Italian donuts. I think the cake we brought superceded them.

Late Saturday night the fire changed directions and moved away from the house. With the weather a bit better, the fire has started to come under control. There's still a chance things can go wrong, but I do believe our house dodged a bullet. We're safe, the house is fine. It weird, though, checking maps of the evacuation and burn areas. Places I've shopped at are in the fire zone, friends houses had to be evacuated. This fire came a little too close to home, literally and figuratively.

Many of you may have noticed there are a few wildfires around Southern California today. Many of you may have further noticed there's one in Yorba Linda. I am a bit on edge, at the moment, but hopeful. The fire's still a ways off from the house, but it's still too close for comfort. The voluntary evacuation zone extends about a half-mile from the OC house. I am stuck in the LA house for the time being, though. If it did come time to evacuate, I'm not sure what I could do, honestly. With all the road closures, I doubt I'd get home with any expediency. Mom has left the house already, largely because the grandparents were staying at our house while some repairs were made at their place. She took them out of the area for better air quality, and at that point, it wasn't easy to get back home. Dad's alone with the dogs, ready to leave if need be. He's already loaded items into the car. It is, understandably, a bit scary. I know people in the evacuation zones. I hope they're okay, too.

We finally added cable to the LA house. More a request from the roommates than a desire of mine, but hey, I get Mythbusters and Law & Order reruns out of the deal, so who am I to complain? Well, I can easily complain about the install! A simple installation of a slitter onto the line we installed for the cable internet and the addition of the cable box and we should have been ready to go, right? Well, we were for a while. Then the signal was lost. It wouldn't come back for a few hours so I called tech support. They couldn't help, so they scheduled a repairman to drop by the house. Oddly, the cable signal returned that night. I called up and canceled the appointment. No point if everything's working, right? I went home for the weekend and we lost the signal again. Arrgh! So I had to call up, go through the same pointless tech support stuff all over again just to reschedule. The repairman thought the cable box was bad, our cable connection from the outside line was a little old and possible sun-damaged, and that the previous cable guy was incompetent. Why? None of the coaxial connectors were crimped down! The whole installation was basically redone!

Quite a different scene today than it was around this time four years ago. Instead of sitting in the La Jolla apartment with Justin getting increasingly depressed with the election results, I'm in the LA house holding back a grin as more and more states went to Obama. I was almost afraid to watch, still worried that things would go bad at the last moment. Russell and I killed time between poll closings watching the new Futurama DVD. Jason joined us as Obama gave his acceptance speech. A very uplifting night indeed.
