Tales from the Con!

Justin only had two days to spend here this year, and he spent a lot of Saturday looking for a graphic novel of the Phoenix Saga. Unfortunately, this doesn't really exist. About the only thing that comes close is a Marvel Masterworks collection that covers the issues after Jean Grey pilots the space shuttle back down to Earth. Only I couldn't remember which volume number it was, and the only ones I could find weren't the right issues. I kept telling Justin that Barnes & Nobles exclusively carries the Marvel Masterworks line in paperback format and that he could find it there cheaper than the hardcovers at the con. Eventually the day ends and Justin has to leave empty-handed.

The next day I'm walking around the dealer room with Mai and decide to look at a booth selling a huge amount of disorganized trade paperbacks and hardcovers. Practically the first book I find? The very Marvel Masterworks hardcover title I was searching for the day before. Of course, I bought it for myself, for a price well below retail. (Hey, I"m collecting these things, too!)

The living room of the L.A. house now has an air conditioner. I finally installed the old wine room window A/C into a window looking out into the side yard. Of course, would I really be dedicating an entire post to this if it went smoothly? Of course not! First, the window is actually comprised of a small set of two glass paned doors opening inwards. Long ago someone installed a wooden blocker to prevent the left door from opening. A quick hammering of dad's chisel got that out. More problematic was the repainting of the house two years ago. Paint clogged up the frame, preventing the window from moving. More chiseling and the use of some kind of dull blade finally got this thing budging. Roger wasn't around to help me place the A/C in the open window, so I had to do that by myself, only to find that there wasn't enough frame space to properly balance the A/C. You see, all the windows in the L.A. house have wrought-iron barriers to prevent break-ins. This means any window A/Cs never have enough space to rest the way they're supposed to. You gotta figure that part out on your own. Fortunately for me, mom had emptied out the bookcase in the dining room only the day before. Its height was only three inches short of the bottom window sill and its width was the exact length from the wall to the fireplace. I managfed to squeeze in the bookcase here and balance the A/C on that. Not liking the odd angle it sat at, I took some unused bricks from the backyard and used those as levelers. Now I just have to find a way to block the rest of the window!

Tales from the Con!

Since Bryan makes little SOS Brigade armbands for sale, he gave us all one to wear as publicity as we walked around the con. He even fashioned a crude flag to proudly display our banner of "SOS 団." It's just a big red sheet cut out into a rectangle and with a loop sewn onto the end to hold it onto a pole. The edges frayed because they weren't serged or anything. Anyway, we're walking around on Thursday and spot the Penny Arcade booth. We walk over to get a pic when the idea strikes Bryan to get Gabe to sign the flag. Gabe's a bit confused over what's going on, but signs anyway. We take a picture with both of them holding up the flag and go off on our merry way, with the PA guys still completely confused as to what the hell just happened. But the signings don't stop there. Oh no, it was only just the beginning...

Tales from the Con!

It's Friday morning, and Bryan, Nammy, and I have arrived an hour before the con opens so we could get the good parking. We're outside the convention centers doors and head to a bench in the shade. As we wait, I'm talking on the phone to check on Justin's progress in getting here. At this point, a man walks up and asks if we want a comic book signed. He points toward an issue of Firestorm lying on the bench. We're a bit confused, as we don't know whose book it is. Then the man seems a little disappointed as he mentions that that's his book. He worked on it.

Taken slightly aback, we tell him to sign the book anyway. We don't know whose comic it is, but we'll be glad to have it signed by one if its creators. Bryan pulls out a marker for him and the man leaves his mark. Since no one's claimed the book, Nammy decides to take it. Only at Comic Con.

Being back from comic con has been a little surreal. It was our first time staying a hotel specifically for this, for many in our group it was the first time they were there for more than a day, and being home today seemed slightly out of place. Maybe it was the humid weather we've had all week, or maybe it was the blackout that happened at 5 and is still ongoing, but it just seems odd that I have work tomorrow. Nothing I can't handly, mind you, just a little unreal.

I'll be off to Comic Con for the weekend, so I don't expect much internet time for the next few days. It looks like this year could be very busy for me, if I attend even half the panels I want to, and make the three meets I've scheduled. I'm a little concerned about that last part, actually. It's hard to imagine how I'll be able to do all I want to knowing a good chunk of my time on three different days will be dedicated to these get-togethers, one of which is meeting some really cool industry people and another of which concerns my work at yojoe.com.

I haven't really been posting much at all this month, huh? My bad. I guess I just don't think I have all that much to talk about. But I do, really.

Today at 2 I have an interview for a paying job. Paying, for once! It's also on the Culver Studios lot, so maybe I'll have some fun surroundings if I get the job. The job itself is pretty much like my present one, only with gopher jobs around LA. The only potential problem with this is that the job would start the 24th, the day after Comic Con.

And speaking of Comic Con, I sent out my now annual Comic Con Survival Guide through e-mail this week. It's more or less a collection of common sense and not so known tips to better maximize the convention experience. Some are no-brainers - comfy shoes, have a backpack, bring food, and what have you. Some not so much - bring a poster tube (you often can get one free, and it sucks having to carry around a poster all day), make a shopping list beforehand, and check out the scheduling now. Just little things I've found in my experience to be good to know. On the off-chance that any of you reading this are with our group and would like to get a copy of this, let me know.

And it looks like we'll have quite a number of people crammed into our little hotel room. We couldn't bum someone's apartment this year, so for the first time, we're actually paying for housing accommodations. And we split the cost with however many will be staying in the room. And from the looks of things, that cost will be very cheap.

Well I've certainly been remiss in updating this thing. Anime Expo was fun, but I mostly stuck to the exhibit hall and Artist's Alley, so I really didn't get the whole experience.

What was more pressing to me was seeing Pirates today. And I did. With 11 of my friends. What started as a small 3 person meet-up grew into a large group. Not a bad thing, per se, but makes it a bit harder to coordinate. And we encountered problems. We were short one ticket for one, not knowing about the 12th person until he showed up. And the showing was sold out. Well thank goodness for my work experience in a cinema. I knew there were more tickets hiding in reserve, and after a brief talk with the cashier we got the extra ticket. Helps to be polite with the employees, believe you me. And as for the movie? Awesome. See it. And stick around for the scene after the credits.
